Edward McMillan-Scott was first elected an MEP in 1984 and held the only Tory seat in the north for many years. He was re-elected in 1989, 1994 and in 1999 as the first of the regional list of 7 MEP's under proportional representation. He was leader of the Tory MEP's and a member of the Conservative Party Board from 1997 to 2001.

In the European Parliament he has focused on tourism, setting up the EU's pro-democracy programme and reform of the EU. Jointly with whistleblower Paul van Buitenen he brought down the EU Commission in 1999 for maladministration and fraud. He is married and has two daughters, and has a constituency home near Wetherby.
